Ecovadis Rating Confirms Dutjahn as Sustainability Leader

This month, we were honoured to receive a ‘Platinum’ rating from EcoVadis, the trusted global sustainability ratings agency, placing us in the top 1% of our industry for sustainability performance.

“This is a tremendous milestone in the company's ongoing sustainability journey,” said Guy Vincent, CEO of Dutjahn Sandalwood Oils.

“As a team, we have a shared mission to drive positive change in our industry. We’re working to create more ethical operations that preserve our planet and allow the communities and people connected to sandalwood to thrive - not just today, but for generations to come.”

After a rigorous assessment of our performance across 21 criteria in three sustainability categories (Environment, Labor & Human Rights, Ethics), Ecovadis awarded Dutjahn Sandalwood Oils a Platinum rating with an overall score of 83 out of 100, with scores of 90 out of 100 for both Ethics and Environment.

One of the standout initiatives during 2022 was staff-wide training on waste reduction, water and energy conservation, leading to the team championing changes that reduced waste and improved waste water treatment.

“When we create products we’re always thinking about impacts. How can we achieve the highest quality product while preserving biodiversity? How can we improve systems to reduce our footprint and create better outcomes for all living things?” said Guy.

It is this adaptive approach to sustainability, combining traditional stewardship with contemporary science, that makes Dutjahn unique. In 2019 the company won the United Nations Equator Prize for its work as a global innovator working to address inequality, stem biodiversity loss and take climate action.

Last year, Dutjahn built on this success, attaining the first UEBT Verified Responsibly Sourced Sandalwood Oil. The result followed rigorous onsite audits assessing the ingredient’s supply chain, from Prior Informed Consent (PIC) and Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) with Traditional Custodians through to biodiversity impacts connected to regenerative forestry and community landcare. This year’s Platinum rating by Ecovadis is the next step in the company’s work to improve efficiency and reduce its environmental footprint.

“While we’re exceptionally proud of achieving a Platinum rating, this is just the beginning – we must continue to strive to do better," said Guy.
